SPRING 2: Can I switch it on?

Week beginning 1 March 2021:

Its Book Day on Thursday! Read or listen to some traditional tales on youtube such as: Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the three Bears, The Three Little Pigs etc and then see how these stories are shown in the illustrations of “Once upon a time”. Discuss the pictures and what is happening to the characters as the reader turns the page. Then make your own story with an adult. What is your title? What happens in the story? Who are the characters? Does it have a happy ending? (adults may scribe the children’s verbal sentences or children can ‘pretend’ write their own story… notice if they make marks in a line from the left of the paper to the right, and help them to hold a pencil in a tripod grip).

Numbers: Its back to number 5 again! Watch the numberblocks “High Five” episode and then afterwards take photo’s of various objects that show 5. For example, 5 bananas, 5 toy cars, 5 pencils. Revise the previous numbers learnt at nursery during the autumn term and do the same for those numbers 4, 3, 2, and 1. Can you have a go at writing these numbers? Afterwards see if you can mix these written numbers up and order them in a number line from 1 to 5.

Topic “Can I switch it on?”: Discuss ways of keeping safe while using electrical things at home. Watch the following show and song to learn more about electrical safety.

Art and Design: Can you get out some tin foil, carboard boxes and milk lids to create your own recycled robot?

Design and Technology: Can you build your own robot out of recycled materials?

Week beginning 22 February 2021:

Listen to the story “The internet is like a puddle” by Shona Innes and talk with an adult what we can learn from this story. The internet is a great tool to help us learn new things, but too much time on the internet is not healthy either. Your task: Use the internet to research an animal you are interested in. Draw this animal in your homework book or upload a picture of it to Evidence Me. Ask an adult to write what information you have learnt about the animal. Then look at your books at home, are any of them Non-Fiction books? What information can you learn from your Non-Fiction books?

Remember to continue to practice how to write your name! Can you do this from memory? Can you write your name on a line?

Topic lesson: Can you take pictures or draw objects in your house that use electricity? Which objects use batteries or a charger to charge the battery? Why do these objects need power? Then sort your toys into a pile that use power (electrical or battery operated) and a pile that don’t. Take a picture of these two piles and upload it to Evidence Me!

Mathematics: Can you count the toys in each pile? Which pile has more? Which pile has less?

Watch Numberblocks “High 5”: Then give some toys to two teddies (not more than 5 each). Who has more? Who has less? Can you make them have the same amount? Can you match numbers 1 – 5 to the amount of toys they have each time? Can you have a go at writing these numbers?

Here are some more number 5 home learning ideas…

Space, Shape and Measures: Allow your child to investigate pouring water into various size containers, or filling containers with pasta, rice or smaller objects. Talk about when a container is full, empty or half full. Discuss which containers would hold more or less. Which containers need super power strength to hold when they are full? Why? This is also a great fine motor physical development activity! Add food coloring/glitter to water for a nice effect!

General home tasks ideas:

Children can use any mark making tools such as pencils, crayons or paint to draw a picture. Comment on their circular or linear marks and allow them to say what they are, even though they may not yet represent the object being drawn.

Listen to and join in with a story:

Choose nursery rhymes and songs to sing with your child each day:

Number and Shape, Space and Measure:

Sort and count objects with accuracy around the house. For example sort the pears and apples in the fruit bowl, or sort the blue and red cars in the toy box. Count them slowly and accurately and say which is more and which is less.

You could also practise counting objects and matching to the correct number as shown below.

Develop your child’s finger muscles by trying some of the following activities:

Make an animal, castle or shape from playdough (Recipe included below)

Search ‘Dough Disco’ on youtube and listen to and follow the moves in the songs.

Threading dry pasta on a string to make a bracelet.

Using scissors to make snips in paper.

Using tools to make marks for example, a paintbrush or pen.
